“Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.” (NIV)
Two years ago my dad passed away. As some of you know, he had a very short battle with cancer. He had started to notice different pains in his body–and that those pains were getting louder. As a result, he went to the doctor.
A bunch of tests uncovered cancer in about a dozen places. The cancers were too wide-spread and too strong to fight. They gave him a year, then six months.
He almost lasted two.
My dad was never much of a philosopher. You were more likely to see him organizing his camping gear or making a fire than you were reading a book. But toward the end of his life he zeroed in on an expression that he kept saying over and over. I want to share it with you:
“Each day is a new life –- so live it like it is.”
Quite often we take our days for granted. We assume there will be many more hugs with those we care about; many more favourite meals; many more laughs with friends; and many more autumns.
But what if we didn’t take those things for granted? My guess is that, like my dad reminded us, we’d actually live each day like was a new life.
Thankful, Captivated, Alive.
Toward the end, he made a valiant effort to get up early each morning, stand up behind his walker (which he called “The Cadillac”), and get outside to watch the sunrise.
He was so captivated by it, like a little child. It was as if he was seeing the sunrise for the first time.
Or the last.
“Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever.” (Psalm 145:2)
Don’t take the gift of today for granted. “Each day is a new life –- so live it like it is.”

- Since I’m in a reflective mood, I thought I’d share this link to what I said at my dad’s funeral 2 years ago. I hope you enjoy it. And be sure to be thankful for the people God has put in your life! 🙂
