A lot of people make “New Year’s Resolutions.” When the year behind gives way to the year-to-come, they “resolve” to do something differently.

Some people make these kinds of resolutions. Some don’t.

Either way, many of us make personal goals. And a new year is a time to look forward to the next 365 days and wonder what we can do differently—and better.

As you think about those goals—formally or informally—I want to encourage you to make them consistent with who God wants you to be. Think about it. If you’re going to shoot for something, don’t make it lame or irrelevant.

Aim high. Don’t waste your mental time and energy on the kind of change that doesn’t really matter or make a difference.

Writing to the Philippians, Paul said, “I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

God has begun a good work in you…

-He wants you to become more like Jesus.
-He wants you to not only be a disciple but to make disciples.
-He wants you to love him with all you’ve got, and to love your neighbour big.
-He wants you to be a person of prayer and integrity.
-He wants you to bring him glory and help bring heaven to earth.

So whether you make a “New Year’s Resolution” or not, as you think about goals for the upcoming year, remember that God has begun a good work in you. Resolve to help the Master Craftsman with what he wants to do.

God finishes what he starts. He keeps his promises. He is faithful to the end. Carry that kind of confidence into your next 365 days.
