The Carthusians are a monastic order of contemplation. They were founded in the 11th century.
I’m obviously no monk, but I recently came across their motto while reading about them. I was inspired by it.
“The cross is steady while the world turns.”
There are days when we just need that reminder.
When we talk about the world spinning, we draw attention to the fact that it is always changing, and not always for the better. Think dizzy and disoriented.
In contrast, the cross remains steady and still. God’s redeeming love in Christ—on full display on the cross—isn’t thrown off course, intimidated or bullied by the dictates of a passing world with passing fancies.
As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:18: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
Friends, I realize there are days when everything seems blurry. So stand firm. Jesus does. Fix your eyes on the one whose powerful love and powerful truth are consistent and clear.
The cross is steady while the world turns.
