Reinforcements

In The Rise of Skywalker there is a scene where the good guys are in a heated fight with the dark side. They are big, bad and ugly, and there are many more of them.

One of the leaders for the good guys is named Poe. He is looking exhausted and defeated. A fellow pilot asks: “Poe, what now?”

As he considers his options, he concedes: “My friends, I’m sorry. I felt we had a shot. There’s just too many of them.”

That’s when another voice cuts through on his communication system: “But there are more of us, Poe; there are more of us!”

It’s the voice of Lando. He’s flying the Millennium Falcon. He arrives out of hyperspace with hundreds and hundreds of ships! It’s unbelievable. The Star Wars theme music plays and the tide is turned.

There are reinforcements—and it is darkness which needs to retreat!

Here on planet earth, we too are encouraged when reinforcements show up to a battle. When that happens we don’t feel outnumbered anymore. Hope starts to muscle her way through the growls of impending doom.

Our battle, however, is not against flesh and blood. It is “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil…” (Ephesians 6:12).

Since the battle happens in the spiritual realm, we can’t always see the reinforcements. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t any. The Lord is at work. Read Psalm 91. He is covering, fortifying, lifting, rescuing, journeying alongside, answering, and honouring his people.

“But there are more of us, [insert your name here]; there are more of us!”

“I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:2).
