Holding fast

“Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him…” (Psalm 91:14, ESV).

What (or who) do you “hold fast” to? What (or who) do you “cling” to?

If someone you care about is about to go away on a long trip, that last hug good bye is often a long one. That’s an example of holding fast. The same could be true of a welcome-home hug after a long absence.

When it comes to God, we can’t hold fast to him physically because we can’t touch him. The meaning of holding fast in a spiritual sense is this: sustained loving commitment.

Is there evidence in your life of sustained loving commitment?

What does sustained loving commitment look like?

Let me tell you what it doesn’t look like. It doesn’t look off-and-on or indifferent. It doesn’t look disinterested or dismissive. It doesn’t yawn at the teachings of Christ.

In contrast, it walks the path through highs and lows. It takes a proactive interest. It is growing and engaged. It is hungry for the teachings of Christ.

Perhaps you don’t have the best track record. Fear not. God is merciful and kind. His arms are always open to someone who sincerely comes to him.

That person might be you. That day might be today. To start again. Or to renew the bond.

God delivers those who hold fast to him—who cling to him—in love.
