Do you talk AT God or WITH God?

In Psalm 91:15 God says: “When he calls to me, I will answer him…”

What does it mean to call out to God? It means to speak with him honestly in prayer. It also means so trusting in him that you expect some sort of response.

With that in mind let me ask you a question: Do you talk AT God or WITH God? There’s a difference.

When we talk AT God, it is one-way. If you’ve ever felt like someone is talking “at” you, you know what I mean!

When we talk WITH God, we are assuming a posture of receptivity. We are seeking his wisdom in a spirit of faithfulness and obedience. We are waiting on him to respond. We are looking for how he might be changing our circumstances. We are open to the ways he is providing for us and guiding us.

Over time, we can slip into a pattern of talking AT God. Perhaps we feel like we just need to get through all the items on our mental prayer list. Or maybe we have started to question whether or not he is active in our lives which—when compared to his other concerns—seem miniscule.

Let’s talk WITH God. Let’s assume a posture of receptivity. Let’s pay attention to what is happening around us. Let’s notice the ways God is providing and guiding.

How do we know that he answers? Because he says so: “When he calls to me, I will answer him.”

Do you talk AT God or WITH God? There’s a difference.
