Jesus’ disciples, Scripture’s pupils

This week I’m leading a Bible story centre at our church’s Vacation Bible Camp. It’s always a lot of energy, music and laughter!

I consider it a profound and meaningful privilege to teach the Bible. Within its Spirit-inspired pages, people of all ages start to know more about God, his promises, and his loving plans for their lives.

But one of the unfortunate trends in our time is a massive drop in biblical literacy. This is true not only for people outside of the church, but inside of it as well.

Distraction, busyness and lethargy can be used by the Evil One to pull us away from the Book of Life.

Being biblically literate isn’t just about accumulating information. It’s about knowing God. It’s about seeing his love for his people. It’s about entering into a powerful and world-changing story as one of his children and soldiers. It’s about growing in Christlikeness. It’s about understanding reality and turning away from deception. It’s about wisdom and light for every chapter of life, including the hard ones. It’s about a hope that is more powerful than hell itself.

In his book Truth and Power, J.I. Packer writes: “Jesus’ disciples must be Scripture’s pupils.”*

Put Bible reading into your routine. As I’ve said before, at first you make your habits, and then your habits make you.

“The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold…” (Psalm 19:9-10).

“Jesus’ disciples must be Scripture’s pupils.”
