Plans that are firm-founded

In Proverbs 16:3 Solomon wrote: “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

This is a great reminder to commit to God whatever you do—whether you’re in school, in the workforce, a retiree, or something else.

When it comes to faith we can mistakenly relegate it to a few quiet moments here and there or to a Sunday morning worship service. But if we are in Christ, we are fully God’s one hundred percent of the time.

God can (and does) use our various daily efforts for his good purposes. It follows, therefore, that we want to commit our studies to him, our work to him, our relationships to him, and our volunteering to him. We want to honour him with our time and energy, and we want him to bless our efforts.

Notice also the second half of the verse: “…and he will establish your plans.” Robert Alter translates it like this: “…that your plans may be firm-founded.”

Without God, our efforts and plans are flimsy. But in him they are firm-founded. Think about how much effort you pour into an average week. How would you prefer it turn out—flimsy or firm-founded?

In prayer, commit whatever you do to the Lord. Ask him to bless it. Glorify him by acting with integrity and doing your best—whether that be science homework, digging a ditch, filing reports, or helping patients.

In him, your work will not be wasted.

“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
