Even if he hinders you 10,000 times

In 1 Thessalonians 3:17-18 (ESV) Paul mentions something to his fellow-believers. He was writing from a different town but really wanted to see them in person so he could help and encourage them.

He wrote: “we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face, because we wanted to come to you—I, Paul, again and again—but Satan hindered us.”

Satan hindered him.

This provides us with a few reminders.

First, Satan is real.

He’s not a fantasy or fable. Jesus said he was real. Paul said he was real. The Bible tells us he is real. He is real.

Second, Satan hinders Paul because he is doing God’s work.

The word “Satan” literally means “adversary.” From this passage (and others) we know that Satan works to thwart Jesus’ people when they are doing his work. Perhaps there have been times when you’ve wondered, ‘Why is God against me?’ Have you stopped to consider that your adversary might actually be the Adversary?

Third, Satan may work against you but he won’t ultimately win.

Christ is greater. If you are in Christ you need to properly equip yourself, but there is nothing to fear. Paul was hindered temporarily but not ultimately. This should encourage you. John Chrysostom says: “Even if the devil hinders you ten thousand times, never give up.”*

Brothers and sisters, it’s a big ‘ole world. There is incredible goodness. There is devastating darkness. Live with both eyes open, and do so with the power of Jesus Christ.

“Even if the devil hinders you ten thousand times, never give up.”
