There are certain virtues which never grow old. That’s because God has ordained them. They are eternally good. We should strive for them regardless of whether the year is 1039, 2023 or 3245.
One of them is humility.
I’ve been spending time thinking about Communion since this past Sunday was World Communion Sunday. This Sacrament is also called The Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist. On the night of his arrest, Jesus took some bread. He broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24).
We are told to deliberately engage in this act to remember who Jesus was (and is), and more specifically, to remember what he has done for us on the cross, giving his life for ours.
Just think about what he did for a moment. The Lord of glory “humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:8) And he did it for people like you and me!
This compels us to live in a certain way. We should certainly be grateful and loving. We should certainly glorify God and share the good news with others.
It should also make us humble. It should compel humility in Jesus’ people whether the year is 1039, 2023 or 3245.
There’s a lot of arrogance out there. Have you noticed? Bravado and pomp are on the loose. They love to go first, to speak-first and listen-later (if ever), and to trample and cancel anyone who disagrees.
But it’s not only “out there.” It’s “in here.” Pride is a home-grown posture which can easily fester in our own hearts and minds.
If Jesus put others first, so can we.
If Jesus forgave transgressors, so can we.
If Jesus had mercy, so can we.
If Jesus washed feet, so can we.
As we listen, look and engage with the world around us, it’s easy to find heroes in the wrong places. Instead, let’s look to Christ.
A humble Saviour desires humble servants.
