“Be devoted to one another in love” (Romans 12:10).
Let me start by asking you a question. Would you rather be known for what you’re FOR, or what you’re AGAINST? In other words, would you rather be known for beliefs, causes or issues that you are FOR, or would you rather be known for beliefs, causes or issues that you are AGAINST?
One option sounds positive, and the other sounds negative.
Granted, there are certainly things that we need to be against as Jesus’ people. And there are times when others are going to misrepresent you and your views regardless of what you say or do.
But I don’t think that any of that should obscure the fact that as God’s people we are FOR a lot of wonderful things, and we should be able to articulate them. Let me provide some examples from history. Biblical faith has:
-given value and worth to all people because they are made in God’s image
-encouraged global and local efforts beyond measure to reduce poverty
-launched innumerable campaigns to feed and clothe the poor
-given us modern hospitals and accessible medical care
-provided reading programs and education, making them readily accessible
-advanced the idea of democracy and accountable government
-fought against evils like violence and human trafficking
-encouraged love, reconciliation and justice among peoples
-made major contributions to the abolition of slavery
-provided foster and adoption care services for untold millions of children
-advanced greater dignity and protections for women and children around the world
-given rise to modern scientific inquiry
-launched programs for the care of God’s creation
-inspired some of the most brilliant works of art, literature and music the world has known
All this is in addition to the saving and hope-saturated redemption given in Christ!
Jesus often spoke against things. But he also spoke for things. This is one of the reasons he is so inspiring and captivating.
As you think through the beliefs, issues or causes which are important to you, try to articulate what you are FOR, and not just what you’re AGAINST, as a disciple of Christ.
