Soul gription

What are your stability structures for the coming storm?

I don’t mean to be alarming. However, Jesus said that before his return there would be wars, rumours of wars, increased Christian persecution, false Messiahs, more lawlessness, and less love. That’s no walk in the park.

So when I ask about your ‘stability structures’ I’m referring to your personal spiritual practices which will keep you steadfast and rooted in God.

In Canada, when the roads get dangerous we put on snow tires. When the bathtub is slippery we get one of those grippy mats or install a handrail.

Similarly, as things get difficult out in the world, we need to have invisible stability structures. Not only will these help you to stand firm, but they’ll help you be a light-radiating follower of Jesus.

Here are some examples.

Daily prayer and Bible reading.
Saying grace at mealtimes.
Weekly worship.
Weekly rest.
Bible memorization.

You’re familiar with them, I know. It’s not rocket science. These are standard practices for God’s people. But they are also stability structures for the coming storm. When we are consistent (and that’s a key word, consistent), they tether us to God so that we are better grounded and better equipped for whatever comes our way.

When I was young, my dad was pulling a load of firewood out of the forest with a tractor. My friend and I were helping. The tires started to spin in the mud. My dad said that chains on the tires would help. ‘Yeah,’ my friend said. ‘They’ll give you more gription!’

And so it is with your invisible stability structures. They’ll give you soul gription for whatever comes our way.

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12).
