“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done…” (1 Chronicles 16:11-12)
With December comes traditions.
People start to sing carols, light candles, put up Christmas trees, buy gifts, and send cards.
Traditions can be good. But not if they obscure the meaning of what we’re supposed to be celebrating. They should help us remember certain things, not distract us from remembering certain things.
Here’s a question that can help: Why are we doing this?
As you go through December, it’s something to ponder which will keep you focussed on what matters most. Let me provide a few examples.
Why are we buying gifts for people? “Well, God has been generous to us, and so we are generous with others. It also helps us remember the gifts that the wise men gave.”
Why are we lighting candles? “Because Jesus is the light of the world.”
Why are we putting a star on top of the tree? “Because of the star over Bethlehem.”
Why are we going to church? “Because God deserves our praise and because it keeps our eyes fixed on Jesus.”
You get the idea.
Not only will this question help you focus, but perhaps it will give you permission to let go of a few things which are probably not a good use of your time anyway.
Traditions should help us remember certain things, not distract us from remembering certain things.
To help, keep a question at the forefront of your mind: Why are we doing this?
