Within Christianity there is an emphasis on being “like Jesus.”
Among other places, this idea is rooted in verses like 1 John 2:6: “Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”
Just look at the word “Christian” itself. We are to be “of Christ” or like little Christs.
There is a sameness to this. In the words of 2 Corinthians 3:18, we “are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory…”
But at the same time, we are all different. And that difference is good. Even if you have a similar skill or ability as someone else, you have a unique contribution to make. Writer Max Lucado puts it like this: “You aren’t the only person with your skill. But you are the only one with your version of your skill.”*
All of this is meant to encourage you forward on the path of discipleship in both conformity and uniqueness. With God’s help we strive to conform to the image of Jesus, and also embrace the unique skills and personalities God has given to us.
No one else has your exact set of experiences. No one has seen the world just as you have seen it. No one else will bring your specific perspective to the table.
Do you and I have some quirks? Yes. Are there things you and I need to work on? Absolutely.
But God has given you a personality, skills, talents and gifts, so that you can make your unique contribution to his kingdom.
No one can play your role… except you.
“You aren’t the only person with your skill. But you are the only one with your version of your skill.”
