Mixed-up thinking results in mixed-up living.
Really? Yes. Here’s why.
Pretend Scenario #1: Let’s say you think that God is apathetic toward his world and his people. You think there’s a Bible verse somewhere which says: “God is apathetic.” As a result, you adopt a posture of apathy toward the world and other people. Since God is apathetic, you don’t think there’s any enduring reason to be loving.
Pretend Scenario #2: Let’s say that you think that God is deceptive. You think there’s a Bible verse somewhere which says: “God likes to lie.” As a result, you adopt a posture of dishonesty. Since God is deceptive, you don’t think there’s any enduring reason to be truthful.
Pretend Scenario #3: Let’s say you think there’s a Bible verse somewhere which says: “Do what you can to get ahead.” As a result, you adopt a posture of insincerity. Since winning-at-all-costs is the rule of the day, you don’t think there’s any enduring reason to have integrity.
In all of these cases, mixed-up thinking has resulted in mixed-up living. They’re simplistic, but they make the point.
God isn’t apathetic; he is concerned and loving. 1 John 4:8 says: “God is love.” He’s also truthful. Hebrews 6:18 explains that “it is impossible for God to lie.” The Lord also knows what is best for our relationships. In Matthew 7:12 we read: “do to others what you would have them do to you…”
If mixed-up thinking results in mixed-up living, then clear-headed thinking results in clear-headed living.
It can be challenging. We sometimes make mistakes. We look back and have regrets. Thankfully, God is also merciful and forgiving; he makes us new and helps us grow as we go. As we walk, talk and tarry with him, he teaches us that as well.
It can take time to work some things out. But know this: More time with God puts you more in tune with God.
Abide with him. Gain clarity. Live wisely.
