Your ‘courage muscle’

Courage. Some people seem to be born with it. But it’s also something which can be developed.

There are a few different ways this can happen. Here’s one of them: Repeatedly doing the right thing when it’s hard. If you do the right thing on Occasion A, you build up your ‘courage muscle.’ That way, when Occasion B comes around, you will have had some practice, and you will again be able to do the right thing. Each time you do the right thing when it’s hard, your courage muscle grows.

An example from history is found in a church father from the fourth century named Athanasius. He defended God’s truth even when he was felt alone in doing so. It would have been very difficult. Nevertheless, he did so when:
-murderers invaded his church
-he stood before emperors who could have had him killed
-he was exiled from his home and country five times
-he had to flee another six times when people tried to kill him

Today we consider him a hero. Back then, many people thought he was a treacherous wretch.

Paul’s counsel to the Corinthians jumps through the centuries and engraves itself on your invisible armour: “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14).

Do the right thing. Even when it’s hard. Then do it again. When you do, you’ll build up your ‘courage muscle.’ As a result, you will honour God, stand firm, love the people around you, and be fruitful for the kingdom. Just ask Athanasius. And Paul. And Jesus.

There’s the backbone you were born with. Then there’s the backbone you were born again with.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.”

–“Deconstructing Christianity? – a talk with Tim Barnett.” Ever wonder why some people radically re-think or re-shape their faith, but in a way that goes against the Bible? Are there people you know who are threatened with this troublesome trend? If so, you can watch my interview with Tim on YouTube here.
