The one in whom God delights

Do you ever come across a verse in the Bible and wonder, ‘How has that not jumped out at me before?!’

That happened to me recently with Isaiah 66:2: “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”

The prophet had spent time speaking about future judgement for the people, but also future hope. Chapter 66 is the final chapter. In verse 22 we heard a word directly from God about those he “esteems.” these are people in whom God delights. Three qualities are mentioned:

First, they are humble. This is the opposite of proud and arrogant. They yield to God’s will. They put others first. They are willing to listen and learn.

Second, they are “contrite in spirit.” This is related to humility. It is someone who acknowledges the gravity of their sin and brokenness, and who seeks forgiveness.

Third, they tremble at God’s word. This is about volcanic reverence (as we discussed on June 25th). It is about recognising the goodness, trustworthiness and sovereignty of the word of God and then striving after it.

This verse obviously doesn’t include everything about our discipleship, but it’s a helpful (and very pointed) reminder about what God wants to see in each of us.

All of three traits are within reach. All are possible with God’s help.

I can tell you right now that all of us have work to do in each of these three areas, myself included. So this isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about clarity and forward motion by the grace of God. When that happens we are living well and shining brightly (even if flickering) for the people around us.

“This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.”
