When you think you’re not noticed

Recognition.

I’m not talking about face-recognition software or any other type of modern technology. I’m talking about being recognized, about being noticed, in a wider sense.

When a young person dreams about being famous, I wonder if a part of the allure isn’t simply about being recognized and noticed.

For adults, why do we like it so much when someone notices how much we’re volunteering, or when the boss acknowledges the extra hours we’re putting in at work?

The reasons are surely multi-faceted. But our longing for recognition—for being noticed—most likely lies close to the centre.

These are existential questions, no matter our age: Do people notice me? Am I important? Do I make a difference?

Social media feeds into this as well. One of the reasons it has become so popular is because it’s a place where we think people will pay attention to us.

In Matthew 10:29-31 Jesus makes this striking statement: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Even. The. Very. Hairs. Of. Your. Head. Are. All. Numbered.

As you grow in your walk with Jesus, you will also grow in your confidence about these very things. Yes, God notices you—and he is interested in the seemingly minute details of your life. Yes, you are important—God uses his people for significant kingdom work in the world. Yes, you make a difference as a vessel of the Holy Spirit, furthering his grace and truth in your community and relationships.

When you think you’re not noticed or recognized, think again.
