A biblical definition of humility

In yesterday’s devotional I shared a few words about success. More specifically, that success in God’s eyes has to do with humble faithfulness.

James was a wise church leader and a half-brother of Jesus. He brings this into focus as he corrects some people about their behaviour: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you” (James 4:10).

But what is humility?

I’ve looked at various biblical usages of the word. Here’s a definition that I think is consistent with the text. It’s being down-to-earth and unpretentious as you yield to God for the benefit of others.

The English word “humility” is connected to the word “humus,” meaning ground or soil. This is where the ‘down-to-earth’ part comes from. It’s seeing things as they are, on the ground level, without pretense or show.

This definition makes it clear that humility includes yielding to God. The opposite of humility is pride and arrogance; these presume to know better than he does. We exist for God, not the other way around.

The definition also states that we are seeking the benefit of others. This is the opposite of being self-serving. The Great Command is about loving God and the people around us. It is focused outward.

Is it just me or is humility downplayed as a modern virtue? People seem intent on being louder and bigger than everyone else. Perhaps humility is confused with getting walked on or being taken advantage of—but those are different things. People who are truly humble actually hold within themselves a powerful confidence; after all, they don’t feel the need to bring attention to themselves or be first in line because they know they are primarily serving the God who always sees.

Let’s enlist in an army of help and hope—one of humble faithfulness to the King of kings.

Humility is being down-to-earth and unpretentious as you yield to God for the benefit of others.
