The sword of the Spirit in another person’s hand

Paul’s teaching about the “armour of God” found in Ephesians 6 is pretty well known.

He describes our spiritual battle as Christians. This is not against flesh and blood (i.e. other people), but against unseen spiritual forces of evil.

He lists the boots ready to proclaim the gospel of peace, the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the helmet of salvation, the shield of faith, and finally the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (verse 16).

People sometimes note that the only offensive weapon listed is the Bible. That said, it’s not to be used harshly or improperly. We can all think of times when someone has been careless when quoting Scripture. When we do, we might be at risk of breaking the third commandment about misusing God’s name (Exodus 20:7).

But when used properly to speak about God’s grace and truth, it is an effective sword in the midst of spiritual battle against the forces of evil.

With this in mind, and also thinking about everything we have said in the past few devotionals about defending your faith, William Gurnall wrote: “The sword of the Spirit in another person’s hand will not defend you.”*

I hope this is motivation.

The Bible is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). When we rejoice in it we are like people who find great spoil (Psalm 119:162). It refreshes our souls, makes us wise, and gives joy to our hearts (Psalm 19:7-8). It provides endurance, encouragement and hope (Romans 15:4). It is inspired by God himself (2 Timothy 3:16), is flawless (Proverbs 30:5), and is eternal and fixed in the heavens (Psalm 119:89).

Oh, and if that isn’t enough—and as Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6—it is a sword against the spiritual forces of evil which are out to take you down.

Soak yourself with the Bible. Spend time in it—daily. If you lack motivation, ask God for it. If you need help, seek it out. You’re not called to be an expert; you’re called to be a disciple.

“The sword of the Spirit in another person’s hand will not defend you.”
