There’s often more happening in Bible stories than we realize. Take, for example, when Jesus fed 5000 men in the wilderness. Yes, it shows us that Jesus can do miraculous things. But it also demonstrates that he is the new and greater Moses.
Here’s what I mean, and why it matters.
Moses led God’s people through the wilderness. In Mark 6 Jesus fed them in a “desolate place.” It’s a word that can also be translated as “wilderness.”
Under Moses leadership, God fed the people manna from heaven. Jesus also fed them. With Moses, there was enough for one day at a time (or, if it was before a Sabbath, two). With Jesus, there were 12 baskets of leftovers.
In the Old Testament, 12 is a number that makes you think of all of God’s people because of the 12 tribes of Israel. In Mark 6, there were 12 baskets of leftovers, as previously mentioned. This may be intended to show us that Jesus provides an abundance for all of God’s people.
There are 5 books of Moses. In Mark 6, Jesus fed the crowd with 5 loaves; plus there were 5000 men.
Is all of this a “coincidence”? Or are we being taught that Jesus is the new and greater Moses?
Today, this might not seem like such a big deal to us. After all, many of us are already convinced. But in those early days it would have been huge and would have helped the people realize Jesus’ colossal significance.
As modern Christians, we sometimes need reminding about this as well. We veer off course and search for help, hope or rescue from lesser sources. But Jesus’ wisdom is greater than any philosophy professor or self-help guru. His teaching is more important than any social media influencer. His word is more enduring and valuable than any celebrity or musician.
He is not just another religious leader. As we are reminded in Acts 10:36 Jesus is “Lord of all.”
When we need help, hope, wisdom or rescue, let’s first look to Jesus. He is more than qualified. His love is unmatched. And his wisdom is without parallel.
Why waste time looking for dimes in the ditch when the God of the universe is waiting with open arms?
Jesus is Lord of all.
