What is the Devil trying to do?

C. Peter Wagner writes: “The chief end of humans is to glorify God and the chief end of Satan is to prevent God from being glorified.”*

There’s a lot in that statement so let’s take a few moments to unpack it.

When he says that the “chief end of humans is to glorify God” he’s referring to question one in the Westminster Shorter Catechism. This is a large biblical theme. We find it in 1 Corinthians 10:31 and elsewhere: “whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

This lies at the heart of what we are called to do as people. When we praise and worship we are glorifying  God. When we love our neighbours or enemies we are glorifying the God who is himself love. When we share the good news about Jesus we are glorifying the God who wants good things for the world. When we speak the truth, pursue righteousness, and work for justice, we are glorifying the God who is wise, holy and just.

It follows, therefore, that Satan wants to stop all of those things. He wants the glory that God deserves. “I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:14).

Do you find it difficult to pray, to go to church, to read your Bible, to volunteer or serve others in a way that is pleasing to God, or to keep growing in Christlikeness? There are a variety of reasons for the challenges we face. But might one of them be that the Adversary of all that is good and true would love nothing more than to prevent God from being glorified?

Put on the armour of God. Shun darkness, embrace light. Remain steadfast. Glorify God.

“The chief end of humans is to glorify God and the chief end of Satan is to prevent God from being glorified.”*
