In Mark 9 we learn about the transfiguration of Jesus. “There he was transfigured before them. His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them” (verses 2-3).
Then Moses and Elijah arrive. Then a voice from heaven proclaims: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” (verse 7)
Both then and now the story is meant to highlight the fact that Jesus is the divine Son of God. The story is intended to give us a robust confidence in that fact and to encourage us to listen to what he has to say more than what anyone else has to say come what may.
In a world where we are easily distracted by other voices, personalities and opinions, this is a needed reminder. If we truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God that means he is more qualified to give us wisdom than anybody else.
-Is there any political leader we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
-Is there any social media influencer we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
-Is there any scientist we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
-Is there any professor we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
-Is there any news anchor we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
-Is there any celebrity we should listen to more than Jesus? No.
Do some of those other people have good things to say? I’m sure they do. But they’re all fallible. Sometimes they’re right and sometimes they’re wrong. But Jesus is always good, holy, wise, loving and true.
Always.
When God said “Listen to him!” he wasn’t just speaking to people in the first century. He was speaking to us.
In a wobbly world, have confidence in your righteous Redeemer. Jesus’ words are God’s words. Listen, trust, and follow.
