James H. Taylor was the pastor of Central Presbyterian Church in Washington. There was a time when he was at a party with a lot of big wigs, including the British Ambassador.
“It is an honour,” he said, “to meet the ambassador of so great a king.” Knowing Taylor was a pastor, the ambassador replied, “Ah, sir, but you are an ambassador of the King of kings.”*
Well, that certainly puts things in perspective!
The British ambassador was referring to Jesus. “King of kings” is a title given to him in Revelation 19:16.
But this insight isn’t just for pastors. It’s for all Christians. Paul says so in 2 Corinthians 5:20: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.”
It’s a big deal. An ambassador has a personal relationship with their monarch. He or she also serves him. The same is true for you and me as ambassadors of Christ.
No, you’re not perfect.
Yes, you make mistakes.
No, it’s not all up to you.
Yes, the Holy Spirit provides help.
Today, be reminded of your royal calling. Our lives are challenging and often have problems, but they are never without purpose.
Think, speak and act with the grace and truth of your sovereign. You are an ambassador of the King of kings.
