Taking God’s name in vain

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7, ESV).

Let’s be honest. Attitudes have radically changed about how we use God’s name.

Up until recently it was actually illegal in England to misuse God’s name. Today there are some young people who only know the name ‘God’ or ‘Jesus Christ’ as a swear word.

Recently the TV show ‘Deal or No Deal’ raised some eyebrows. Whenever a swear word was used, it was beeped out. But three times someone said God d___, but it was not beeped out. Apparently that was okay for all ages. This is just a small example of how much attitudes have changed.

When we think about using God’s name “in vain” we tend to first think about using it casually or in swearing. We should certainly be thoughtful and respectful when we use it.

Something we frequently neglect, however, is how God’s name is connected to his larger mission in the world. In Exodus 9:16 while God was delivering his people from slavery he said this: “But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.” God’s global mission is connected to the proclamation of his name.

You and I have a role to play in the proclamation of his name as ambassadors of the King of kings. When we treat his name casually or haphazardly we are not helping the cause. But when we treat it respectfully and purposefully, we contribute to his reputation in the world—a world which desperately needs his grace, truth, healing and hope.

Let’s be thoughtful and respectful when we use the Lord’s name. “But for this purpose I have raised you up, to show you my power, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.”
