Bearing the Name

Let’s take a quick look at a much-neglected aspect of the third commandment which says: “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…” (Exodus 20:7, ESV)

It has to do with the word “take.” In Hebrew it’s the word “nasa’.” It means to take, to bear, or to carry.

It’s telling that in Exodus 28:29 Aaron the priest “bears” the names of God’s people on his physical garments. It’s the same word, nasa’.

In a similar way, we “bear” God’s name upon us as we do God’s work in the world. We carry it with us. I believe this connection with Aaron is deliberate. After all, if we obey God’s voice and keep his covenant we will be a “kingdom of priests” (Exodus 19:6). Just like the priests of old, we have access to God and represent God to others!

On old hockey coach gave us a pep talk when we were down after two periods. We all had our individual names on the backs of our jerseys, he said. But the most important thing was the team name and logo on the front. That was who we were truly playing for.

With this in mind, what if we had “The Lord” written on the front of our clothing! Can you imagine how differently we might speak and act?

“You shall not take [bear, carry] the name of the LORD your God in vain…”

Do not represent the Lord’s name haphazardly. Instead, carry it with thoughtfulness, respect and purpose.
