Most of you have probably not committed murder.
But you have probably been very angry at someone.
Here’s the connection.
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said: “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment” (Matthew 5:21-22).
He went on to speak about the importance of reconciling with an adversary. Otherwise, the disagreement could land you in court, or even jail.
His point has to do with escalation. Unchecked anger escalates. It simmers within. If we don’t deal with our anger, it has the potential to grow. It could spill out into our relationships in a bad way. This can have consequences.
Actually, “explode” is a better word than “grow” or “spill out.”
Have you heard the expression about the “sleeping giant”? When a mean giant sleeps it can’t harm you. But if it wakes up, you had better run!
That’s like anger. It is a sleeping giant!
Do you struggle with anger? What about its cousins, impatience and resentment?
Look within. Learn what is really going on. Bring it to God. Cultivate humility and patience. If necessary, get additional help.
Anger is the sleeping giant who will make things worse, not only for you, but for the people around you.
