“Because my God is bigger”

There are a lot of big things happening in the world. They can be scary or unsettling.

We hear about missiles and rumours of war. We hear about destruction and pain. And that’s on top of the general malaise or anxiety that a lot of people are feeling.

Last winter I was speaking with another parent at the hockey arena. We have good talks while watching our sons rip up and down the ice. He’s an elder at another church in my community. He was telling me about a conversation he had with someone. They asked him: “Aren’t you worried about all the craziness happening?”

His reply was golden. “No, because my God is bigger.”

What a great word of perspective!

This doesn’t mean that we don’t work for solutions. It doesn’t mean we don’t pray. It doesn’t mean we don’t care and advocate for the needs for others. We do. It simply means that we are not defined by fear and worry.

“For you are great and do marvelous deeds; you alone are God” (Psalm 86:10).

God is almighty. God is powerful. God is wise. God is just.

And God is working… even when you can’t see how all the pieces fit together.

Don’t be so obsessed with all the ugliness that you can’t see the beauty.

Don’t be so obsessed with all the problems that you can’t see all the possibilities.

Don’t be so consumed with what you think Satan can do to you that you forget what Almighty God can do for you.

There are a lot of big things happening in the world. They can be scary or unsettling.

But our God is bigger.
