In 1 Corinthians 10:31 Paul writes: “whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
It’s a famous verse. It reminds us to give God the glory no matter what. It’s not about us; it’s about him.
When we feel overlooked or taken for granted we can take heart because we are actually serving and glorifying God. In the end, he’s the one we’re trying to please. It’s about him, not about what other people think (or don’t think).
Likewise, when we are doing jobs that seem small or insignificant, or when we feel like we failed at something even though our heart was in the right place, we can reassure ourselves because it’s about focusing on God, not other people’s expectations.
What I’m about to say next is a word of caution. It has to do with spiritual pride.
It’s easy to say we are doing everything “for the glory of God,” but in truth are actually doing it for the recognition.
Yes, it is nice to be recognized and thanked. But if we are truly living for the glory of God, it won’t bother us as much when we are overlooked or taken for granted. We won’t worry that our contributions seem “small” in the eyes of others. After all, we’re doing it for God, not to impress other people.
We can’t truly glorify God if we lack humility. Why? Because the ego always wants to be first.
Do you sometimes feel overlooked? Taken for granted? That your contribution seems “small” in the eyes of others?
Hebrews 4:13 reminds us that “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.” A little later on that same author reminds us that “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them” (Hebrews 6:10).
God sees. He will not forget. Remember that your true and most important audience is none other than the Lord God. Whatever you do, do it all for his glory.
