The more thoroughly you know him

“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence…” (2 Peter 1:3)

The more thoroughly you know Jesus, the more thoroughly you experience Jesus.

Let me explain.

Jesus does a series of different things in the Bible. He teaches, he heals, he expels demons, he saves, he forgives, etc. If we focus exclusively on one or two things while neglecting the others, we may be limiting the extent to which we experience his blessing or power in our lives.

For example, if I focus exclusively on his role as Saviour, I may certainly feel his peace and forgiving love since he has saved me from the consequence of my sin. I may also feel less stress or fear in the face of danger or death because I know he has given me peace with God.

But if I then neglect his teachings about how to live in a way that pleases God on a day-to-day basis, I will be less wise. I won’t benefit from his wisdom, nor will I be able to bless others with it.

Here’s a second example.

If I focus on his teachings about inspiring topics such as mercy, righteousness, love or justice, but totally discount the unseen spiritual realm, including the reality of evil spirits and demonic oppression, I may be closing myself off to the power and freedom he can provide in certain areas of my life in which the demonic may be exerting and influence.

That’s why the more thoroughly you know Jesus, the more thoroughly you experience Jesus. When you invite his grace, truth and power into your life through greater faith, knowledge and intimacy, you are opening yourself up to greater blessing.

My prayer today is that this will motivate you to learn more and to grow closer.
