“Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness” (1 John 3:4).
When I was young and we went to church I would usually go to Sunday School.
Before too long, however, I wanted to be up in the service with the adults so that I could hear the sermon.
I remember the preacher warning us to not break the law. At the time I assumed he was talking about the laws of our municipality or country. When my dad would take me somewhere in the car, I would see him drive over the speed limit and think to myself, ‘Dad is doing something the preacher said not to do!’
Although we should certainly be safe on the roads, the preacher was actually talking about breaking God’s laws. That’s the definition of sin. As quoted above, “sin is lawlessness.” It is breaking the law of God.
Over time, if we’re not careful, we can make excuses. We make deliberate choices which go against the word of God and against the way of God. In those times it is as if we are saying, ‘I think I know better than you, God, about what is best for my life. I want you to forgive me and let me into heaven, but when it comes to the rest of my life and choices, I’ve got this on my own.’
Today is a reminder that God loves his children as a Father who is infinitely wise. He rescues us, adopts us, calls us his own, blesses us, and guides us. He instructs us about what is best for us… because he actually does know what is best.
As the old expression goes, “Father knows best.” Let’s trust his grace, quit the excuses, and recommit to living in the powerful footsteps of Christ. His way is also the best way for us.
