One of the biggest threats to road safety today is distracted driving. The national collision database says it contributed to 25.5% of serious injury collisions in 2021. Each year it seems to be increasing. A national survey found that 79% of drivers admitted to being distracted while driving.
But this devotional isn’t about distracted driving. It’s about distracted living—which is much, much worse, especially when you think about eternity, faith, priorities, and what God calls us to do while here for a short time on earth.
When you study his letters, the apostle John is very repetitive. Check this out:
“love one another” -1 John 3:11
“love one another” -1 John 3:23
“love one another” -1 John 4:7
“love one another” -1 John 4:11
“love one another” -1 John 4:12
“love one another” -2 John 1:5
“love [your] brother” -1 John 3:10
“love the brothers” -1 John 3:14
“love… in deed and in truth” -1 John 3:18
“[Abide] in love” -1 John 4:16
“love [your] brother” -1 John 4:21
“love the children of God” -1 John 5:2
Okay, we get it!
Or do we?…
I tend to think that John is repetitive on purpose. He knows that we get easily distracted with lesser things. Like squirrels, our attention and focus skips quickly from this thing to that thing.
It sometimes happens to me too. But when we are constantly distracted from the things that matter most, we miss out the life God wants us to live, including the love he wants us to share.
Today, let’s refocus on Christ and share his love and truth with a hurting world.
