Prioritizing what Jesus prioritizes

In the previous devotional we talked about “distracted living.” Just how someone can become a “distracted driver” when behind the wheel, we can lose our focus about what and who matters most in life.

As the people of God, it can be helpful to think deliberately about this with the following question: Am I prioritizing what Jesus says to prioritize, or am I being unnecessarily distracted by rabbit holes?

A “rabbit hole” often happens online. We can get obsessed about certain topics. We go deeper and deeper and deeper. Some of these topics are even good. They’re possibly biblical.

The issue, however, is when they take over and become disproportionate.

Jesus himself tells us what our priority should be. A religious expert asked him which is the “first” or “most important” commandment.

Jesus answered: “‘The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:29-31).

Note the word “greater.” That is Jesus’ way of saying that those two things—wholehearted love for God and neighbour—should be at the top of your list.

The reason I’m saying this is because it is easy for us to get sucked into rabbit holes. Some of those rabbit holes might even be noble. The issue is when they become so disproportionate in our thinking that they eclipse our emphasis on what Jesus says is most important.

These days, especially with the internet, it’s easy to lose our sense of proportion.

So, let’s re-centre. Am I prioritizing what Jesus says to prioritize, or am I being unnecessarily distracted by rabbit holes?

“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength… [and] You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
