I once heard John Ortberg make an analogy. He said that when people envision their future, they picture themselves standing before a series of doors.
Let’s say there are ten doors. Which one will we choose? If there’s only one correct door, that can make us stressed. After all, we have a 90% chance of choosing wrongly!
However, what if there were seven good doors, not just one? What if the most important thing wasn’t simply which door we chose, but how we walked through it, and who we walked through it with?
To be clear, some doors are not good. Hopefully those become clear when we read the Bible, pray, and talk to other wise Christians. But what if the others were okay, provided we sought to be prayerful and faithful, and provided we followed Jesus and glorified God as we did so?
I think this is helpful when thinking about “God’s plan for your life.” Too often, we can get tripped up in the specifics and miss the most important thing in the process: God’s Plan A for your life is for you to cooperate with the Kingship of Jesus.
We are told over and over that Jesus is a King. “Christ” itself is a kind of royal title. He spoke about a “kingdom.” He presented himself to Jerusalem as a King (see Zechariah 9:9; Matthew 21:5). And in Revelation 19:16 he is victoriously declared to be the “King of kings and Lord of lords.”
As a Teacher, Jesus has students. As a Shepherd, he has sheep. As a Master, he has servants. And as a King, he has subjects.
The future can be intimidating. We can get nervous about which door to take. But what if we took the pressure off? What if we prayed about it, lived by the Word of God, and simply sought to cooperate with Christ regardless of our particular circumstances?
Let’s entrust our future to a God who is already there.
No matter what your future holds, God’s Plan A for your life is for you to cooperate with the Kingship of Jesus.
