Peter was a fisherman. Jesus called him into a life of discipleship and leadership: “Follow me,” he said, “and I will make you become fishers of men” (Mark 1:17).

Sure, Peter was imperfect. There was a time when he denied Jesus (Luke 22:58). He also had a habit of putting his foot in his mouth, like the time he told the Messiah that he knew more than the Messiah about what the Messiah should be like (Mark 8:32).

Peter was also a fighter. In fact, when people came to arrest Jesus on the evening before his crucifixion, he took out sword and cut off someone’s ear! (John 18:10)

Over time, Peter had to learn how to focus his fight. And that’s exactly what he did. It’s called self-control. We see it on display in his letters in the New Testament. Peter continued to be a leader with zeal, but he learned to redirect his zeal in a healthier and more God-honouring direction.

We can do the same. We need to focus our fight.

With that in mind, our weapons are spiritual, not physical. We are not fighting against people, but for people. There’s a big difference. Let me say it again. We are not fighting against people, but for people.

Keep fighting for the truth of God.

Keep fighting for the love of God.

Keep fighting for the light of God.

Keep fighting for the kingdom of God.

Keep fighting for the children of God.

Keep fighting for the people that God has put into your life.

Keep fighting for your soul, and for the souls of men and women and boys and girls for whom Christ died.

Life is a battleground. What’s to be done? Focus on God. Rest when you can. Keep the big priorities at the top of your list…

And keep fighting. Because our God will never stop fighting for you.
