Your spiritual gift

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul writes, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them… Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good” (verses 4, 7).

In a profound passage, Paul explains how God gives spiritual gifts to all Christians. If you are a follower of Jesus, you have at least one spiritual gift. Its purpose is to build up the church and for the “common good.”

But what is a “spiritual gift”?

Basically, it’s a God-given talent or skill. When you use it, you are doing God’s meaningful work for the benefit of others and to bring him glory!

So here’s my question: What is YOUR spiritual gift?

There are many different gifts in the New Testament: A special ability to share knowledge is a gift. Encouraging others is a gift. Healing or speaking in tongues are gifts. Serving the practical needs of others or being efficient at administration are gifts. Showing mercy to people in need is a gift. So is sharing your faith, discerning between good and evil, and teaching.

My primary gifts are prophecy and teaching. When I use them I feel like I’m doing what I was put on earth to do. Even through the challenging chapters in life, I know I have purpose.

You too were made on purpose and for a purpose!

One way to learn what your gift might be is to take an online test. (I’ve provided a sample link below.) Or maybe pick up a book about spiritual gifts.

If God has given you at least one spiritual gift to build up the church and for the common good, why would you not want to find out more and put it into practice? It would be like Shakespeare never pursuing his writing, or Babe Ruth never picking up a bat.

If you are a follower of Jesus, you have at least one spiritual gift. Do you know what yours is?

When you find out, and when you put it into practice, it can make you feel like you’re doing what you were put on earth to do.
