Do you need wisdom to ground you? To make you more stable? Me too.

Fortunately, Jesus’ half-brother James (a prominent leader in the early church), tells us what to do:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” (James 1:5-6).

There you have it. If you lack wisdom you should confidently ask our generous God for it and he will give it to you—no matter how many times you ask.

We’re not used to this type of generosity. John Calvin offers an illustration. If a friend offers us help and we repeatedly take them up on their offer, perhaps after a little while they won’t really want to help us anymore. Maybe their generosity will wear out.

But God is different. God, Calvin says, “is prepared to heap new benefits on top of the old, with neither limit nor calculation.”*

What good news! 

Friends, Do you need wisdom to ground you? To make you more stable? Ask God. Well-rounded people are well-grounded in the wisdom of God.

But don’t be afraid to do the work. Seek his council through Bible-reading and Bible-people, and through prayer and preaching.

He “is prepared to heap new benefits on top of the old, with neither limit nor calculation.”
