A soul rooted in humility

Hello! After a week away, the ‘Up!’ devotional is back to your email inbox and social media feeds.

James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

God OPPOSES the proud, but shows FAVOUR to the humble. Would you rather God oppose you, or show you favour?

Yeah, me too!

Here’s something I’ve noticed. People who make massive character blunders, frequently harm others, and use words that leave invisible scars don’t tend to suffer from an excess of humility.

Humility is disposition of the heart and mind which yields to God’s will and which is attentive to the concerns of others.

Augustine offered a helpful illustration about the fortifying effect of humility: “As a tree must drive its roots deep down, in order to grow up tall, the man who does not have his soul rooted in humility will find height to be his downfall.”

Crash!

So root your soul in humility—yielding to God’s will and attentive to the concerns of others.

Not only will you be a blessing to others, but you will be guarding yourself against an illness of spirit which will inevitably rot your heart and turn out to be your downfall.

“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
