Humility and receptivity to God

We’re focusing a few devotionals on hearing (or discerning) the voice of God in our lives.

You hear God’s voice by seeking God’s voice.

In addition to saturating yourself with Scripture, and prayer, and seeking the counsel of other godly people, it’s important to cultivate humility in your character.

In the Bible, humility comes up time and time again as something to strive for. One of the reasons humility is important when we are trying to discern the voice of God in our lives is because it is closely related to being teachable. If you are not thinking and acting with humility, then you are closing yourself off to hear from God. Why? Because your pride and arrogance are going to drown out his voice. You’ll be more concerned with what you want than what God wants.

People who lack humility lack receptivity to the voice of God.

Speaking about Jesus in John 3:30, John the Baptist said: “He must increase, but I must decrease.” Or consider this piercing gem of insight from Proverbs 11:2: “with humility comes wisdom.”

Live with an honest assessment of yourself. Seek the well-being of others. Don’t scramble to be first. Admit when you’re wrong. Be quick to listen.

Friends, you simply cannot be full of God’s wisdom if you are already full of yourself.

Those who grow in humility also grow in receptivity to the voice of God.
