At the church where I serve, we have a monthly memory verse. The more you get into God’s word, the more God’s word gets into you.
Recently I introduced John 14:6. It’s quite well-known. I asked the congregation who had memorized this at some point in their lives. About 40 hands went up. These words from Jesus himself have clearly been important to a lot of people.
Here they are: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Have you ever paused on the meaning of those words “way,” “truth,” and “life”?
First, Jesus is the way to God. Not only is he the door itself, but he is the path on which we discover a rich relationship with God.
Second, Jesus is the truth. Not only is he truth in the flesh, but he provides wisdom about all the things that matter most, including God’s will, love, relationships, family and priorities.
Third, Jesus is the life. Not only he is life itself, perfectly embodied, but he shows us the fullness of the life God intends for us. It is a life which begins in his footsteps and which continues beyond death.
John 14:6 reminds us that Jesus is our map. He is the way to God, the truth about God, and the life God intends for us.
Perhaps you too want to memorize John 14:6. Without a map, we’re lost. With it, we’re found.
