Just because something doesn’t have a bow

Just because something doesn’t have a bow, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a gift.

Let me explain. Gifts often come in packages with bows. When someone gives us a gift it is pretty obvious what is happening, especially if we’re at a birthday party, at a graduation, or on Christmas morning.

But we need to think more broadly.

First, there are gifts in God’s creation.

These are things like the sun, rain and harvest. These are fresh air, singing chickadees, and apple trees.

Second, there are gifts of people.

These include their laughter, friendship, the time and help they offer, and of course the people themselves.

Third, there are experiences.

These include positive experiences, and even difficult ones which refine and strengthen us.

Fourth, there are spiritual gifts.

Each Christian has at least one. Peter writes: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). God gives us gifts to use so that we can steward God’s grace—in so doing we glorify him, serve others, and live meaningful lives!

So yes, gifts are everywhere. They are around you, and they are within you.

When we think more broadly about gifts, we tend to be less entitled and more content.

Just because something doesn’t have a bow, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a gift.
