Your example to the 99

I’ve heard an expression a few different times. Perhaps you have too. Here it is: “Out of one hundred people, one will read the Bible, and ninety-nine will read the person reading the Bible.”

It’s a way of saying that the lifestyle of a Christian is on display for everyone to see. That’s how others will learn about God.

I don’t know about you but I don’t think I like that expression very much! It’s a lot of pressure!

And yet, Scripture teaches that we are Christ’s ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20). Jesus says that the light we share will help others glorify God (Matthew 5:16). In John 13:35 he also says: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Derek Prince has an encouraging word for Christians who are a bit daunted by all of this: “The Holy Spirit is realistic about our failings. He gently points out our mistakes and sins, and helps us to change. At times He may powerfully convict us, but He never condemns us.”*

That’s helpful. Yes, we are ambassadors. Yes, we are to shine God’s light. Yes, others will know we are Jesus’ disciples if we love one another. But God is under no illusions about us. He knows us better than we know ourselves! He may reveal to us the seriousness of our sin and bring us back on track, but he never condemns us. Romans 8:1 is a great verse to keep close to your heart: “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”

Be deliberate about your example. But also be honest, humble, reliant on God, committed to ongoing transformation, and confident that God’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

At times God may powerfully convict us, but in Christ he never condemns us.
