Come to me, and I will give you rest

When I ask people about their favourite Bible verse, many point to Matthew 11:28. That’s where Jesus says: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

He goes on to talk about his “yoke” which is easy, and his burden which is light. A “yoke” was shared with two animals. The weaker was helped by the stronger—and so it is with us and Christ.

With this in mind, let’s take a few moments to ponder Jesus’ words about rest. He isn’t just speaking about physical rest. In fact, he specifically mentions “rest for your souls” in verse 29.

Come to me, and I will give you rest…
-From the lie that it’s all up to you.
-From thinking you’re all alone.
-From the deception that you have to be perfect.
-From unrealistic expectations.
-From the chaos of the world.
-From the busyness that chokes your soul.
-From the noise that never seems to stop.

There is good news. Our help and hope is in none of these, but our Lord and unshakable Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Perhaps today is the reminder you need at just the right time.  There’s only one Saviour—and it’s not you.

“Come to me,” Jesus says, “all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
