A few years ago I was watching my son play a hockey game. There was a father of a boy on the other team bellowing instructions at his son on the ice—instructions which, I should add, weren’t very smart.

As a result, the boy was confused. Should he listen to his coach, or should he listen to his thundering father who was saying something different with his own set of ignorant instructions? 

His head was swiveling from one voice to another. The whole thing was embarrassing to watch and I felt sorry for the kid. 

As Christians, are we in a similar state of confusion, swiveling our focus between the voice of Jesus and lesser influences?

Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

This is about concentrating on Jesus. It’s taking direction from him, being inspired by him, and focusing on things he wants us to focus on. 

These include worship, prayer, Scripture, fasting, fellowship with other believers, acts of love and service toward our neighbours and those in need, cultivating virtue, rest, nurturing healthy relationships and even laughter. Yes, yes, yes!

Don’t be a swivel head. Look to Jesus. It’s about concentration.

Run with perseverance the race marked out for you, fixing your eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
