John 2:6-7: “Nearby stood six stone water jars… each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim.”
One of Jesus’ most popular miracles is turning water into wine. We like a party, don’t we!
And it’s not like it was a small amount. If you do the math it works out to about 568 litres of wine. That’s approximately 738 bottles!
Jesus is clearly the centre of the story. But off to the side, slightly in the shadows, is a man whose reputation has been rescued: the groom. In a world which put a mile-high premium on honour, running out of wine at a multiple-day wedding feast could not only have upset an entire village, but destroyed his reputation, possibly even bringing ruin to his family.
God comes to us in human form in Jesus. He sees this groom—standing on the brink of ruin—and carries him from disgrace to dignity.
Well, the groom’s Saviour is also ours.
He sees you. He carries you from disgrace to dignity.
No blunder is greater than God’s grace.
