More than just one moment

One of the ideas people have is that meaningful faith is formed and shaped in one big dramatic moment. Kind of like a spiritual “Big Bang” event.

And in some cases, it is.

But what I’ve noticed is that most people’s faith is formed and shaped over time—and as a result of MANY factors.

Here’s why I think this should encourage you.

As you form and shape your faith, and as you try to positively impact the faith of others, know that it’s not all up to you, and it’s not always dependent on one moment. God is working behind the scenes and through other people and situations.

Faith forming and shaping is often a team effort. God composes and orchestrates the score, and the rest of us play our own little parts to help make the music.

The quiet conversation before bed, the experience at camp, a Bible story, the Sunday School teacher, the sincere friend in small group, that song on the radio, a humble godly example who lights the way…

It’s like in 1 Corinthians 3:6 when Paul writes, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow.” In  other words, many people and factors are at play, but it is God who is making it all happen.

So as you form and shape your faith, and as you try to positively impact the faith of others, know that it’s not all up to you, and it’s not always dependent on one moment. God is working behind the scenes and through other people and situations.

You just have to be faithful in the daily things you say and do. Faithfulness is your job; effectiveness is God’s.
