Truth is silenced when witnesses are silent.
This statement presupposes that truth actually matters and that witnesses have a vital role to play in sharing that truth for the benefit of others.
If you’ve ever been an actual witness on a witness stand, or even if you’ve watched crime shows on TV, you’ll know that to be the case.
In the New Testament, the apostles and early disciples are called witnesses because they walked with Jesus, saw him alive after he was dead, and were entrusted with his message. In Luke 24:48 Jesus says: “You are witnesses of these things.” As witnesses they had a vital role to play in sharing his truth for the benefit of others.
Even though a lot of time has passed, we too can be witnesses. Our words and actions continue to have a vital role to play in sharing the truth of the risen Jesus for the benefit of others.
I’d like to offer one practical idea to help us do so: Don’t delete your faith when talking with your friends and family. How often are we talking with people and either skip, mute or gloss over the things of God because we don’t want to seem weird or different?
It’s not about being an expert or having eloquent words or even having a perfect life. (Phew!) It’s about being honest about what you have known and experienced to be true.
For the benefit of others.
Can I get a witness? Amen.
