I’ve had the privilege of talking with many people in their last days on earth.
As people look back on their life, there are moments of reflection. Do you want to know what people never say? They never say, “I wish I had earned more money. I wish I had worked more. I wish I had been more popular. I wish I had a nicer house.”
I’ve never heard that. Not once.
What people DO tend to say is how thankful they are for all the good things they have received. They also tend to express ongoing concern for the well-being of loved ones. And if they express some sort of regret, it usually has to do with wishing they had made more time for what truly counts, becoming more involved in a cause that really made a difference, or simply being more forgiving or faithful.
Psalm 90:12 says: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
When you identify the right priorities on your death bed it’s called perspective; when you identify them before you get there it’s called wisdom.
Godspeed.
